This report – What Tools Developers Actually Use – is useful data for me, as I have been looking at various technology stacks to use for web development in my company. I like to leverage open source, so its good to know what choices have a good mindshare and a good eco-system. My picks: Bugzilla bug tracking (survey #2), MySQL database (survey #1), Eclipse IDE (survey #1), Redmine Project Management (#2, or maybe Trac at #4), Google Analytics (#1), Rackspace Cloud (not open source, but #2 in cloud web hosting vs Amazon at #1), and Git Version Control (survey #1).

On the matter of web framework, Ruby on Rails is the popular choice in this survey, but I’d rather go PHP or Java, so I started using YII PHP and I am also looking into Java-based Play. I may have to add Ruby on Rails to my “try it” list, as both YII and Play are inspired by the Ruby-on-Rails MVC framework architecture.
